How to check the safety of your cables?

Knowledge

Current cable manufacturing technology can produce quality, durable and long lasting products. However, there are still many factors, especially external factors such as environment, application and installation that can cause premature failure of cables.

Venine Guru is a tool that’s been set up to guide you through the selection process to ensure you choose not only the safest cable, but the most cost effective for the application, as well as plenty of tips along the way.

            1. Check that the wire colours installed correctly and fix any incorrectly installed. In the case of large error like incorrect colour used on a whole building, ensure there is a note on the main switch or the main panel.

            2. Check the wiring joints and retighten at least once a year

            3. Check temperature of the wires. If they are warm it may point to a problem such as overload of electricity and size may not be compatible or a joint (eg plug/socket/switch) is not connected well.

            4. Has the cable colour deteriorated? Any deterioration in the colour(for example white is now dark, discouloured or ashy) that may mean the cable is being subjected to higher than its rated load or a termination/joint somewhere is loose.

            5. The wire conductors should be in good condition. If you find burning marks, damage or anything other than conductors in good condition, identify the cause and replace with new cable.

            6. It is good practice to perform electrical safety checks at least once a year keep good documentation.

            7. The voltage and size of the cables should be suited to the application to avoid electric fire and other damage.

            8. Carefully inspect internal wall wiring for damage by mice or rats as this can cause electrical fire.

Finally, Venine Guru recommends that you perform a safety check at least once a year for the safety and protection of your assets, your house and your family.
